Greeting Card Occasions
Occasions are funny things. On the outside, we often play down their
importance, protesting with calm indifference - it's just another birthday. But
inside we count the number of cards we have received compared to last year and
note who sent a card and who didn't, it matters to us. This is common but
unspoken knowledge - armed with it some people get sucked into whirl winds of
reciprocal gift giving. Two friends, who have gone separate ways, barely speak
to each other for a year at a time but at Christmas and birthdays carefully
budget twenty pounds to spend on each other. Eventually, much to the relief of
the other, one of them has the courage to hold off on the gift and just send a
card.
Greeting cards are popular because they show, in an inexpensive way, our place
in other people's lives and hearts. This is true on birthdays and Christmas but
is even more true after the death of a loved one or during serious illness. On
occasions such as birthdays, greeting cards say "You are my friend and I
remembered that today is your birthday" During bereavement or the fear and
uncertainty of serious illness a card says "I know about your troubles and I
want you to know that I care". During hard times people need to know that they
have a place in people's lives.
This section is all about occasions - have you ever wondered how mother's day started?
or why we started sending birthday cards? Or do you want ideas for something to write on
Valentine cards? - This section has it all.
