Mother's Day History (part 2)
As the Romans conquered and inhabited many parts of Europe they introduced there
customs and festivals. The Hilaria, it is believed, was no exception.
As Christianity spread through Europe the Church found that redefining customary
celebrations and festivals in honour of pagan gods as Christian celebrations was more effective
than banning them altogether.
The Hilaria, with its celebration of Mother Earth or Mother Godess (Cybele),
fell around the third or fourth week in lent. It is believed that the Mother Church
replaced the Mother Goddess as the reason for the celebration. The occasion required
that people worshipped at their Mother Church (the place of their baptism).
