St. Valentine
St Valentine is the name of possibly two legendary martyrs who
lived in 3rd Century Rome. Unfortunately not much is known about them.
The first was a Roman Priest who was martyred during the
persecution of Christians by Emperor Claudius II Gothicus. He
was buried on the Via Flaminia and, reportedly, Pope St Julius
I built a basilica over his grave.
The other was Bishop of
Terni in Italy. He was also martyred in Rome. His relics were
subsequently returned to Terni. It is possible that the two
St. Valentines are in fact one person and these are different
accounts of the same story.
